We may not think of our gardens as hotbeds of biodiversity, but they can be! Jerome McDonnell hosts WBEZ radio’s “Worldview” program, and a world of biodiversity grows in his suburban yard. Citizens for Conservation recently designated his yard a “Habitat Corridor” of native plants and earth-friendly practices. On February 23, 2015, Jerome will talk to the Arlington Heights Garden Club about how native plants, rain gardens, and organic practices helped make his yard a living space for living things! He will present slides showing the beautiful plants growing on his property.
Meredith Tucker from Citizens for Conservation will explain the goals of their Habitat Corridor program followed by a brief presentation on how homeowners can protect pollinators through their choice of pesticides. She discusses the dangers neonicotinoid insecticides pose to the biodiversity in our communities. Neonicotinoids are implicated in bee Colony Collapse Disorder.
